About the Symposium

The Uganda Society of Architects is hosting the next East Africa Institute of Architects' (EAIA) Annual General Meeting from 28th to 30th July 2011 in Kampala. At this event, the Architects' Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA), negotiated in accordance with the EAC Common Market Protocol, shall be signed. Among the scheduled events is the Annual Architects' Symposium. It is expected that this will be a high profile event with representatives from the East African Community in attendance.

Background

As urban populations grow, now at more than 4.5% per annum on average in the major East African capitals (UN-Habitat, 2010), new ways have to be found to equip both larger and smaller cities to plan for expansion, use their resources sustainably and deliver services. The intention of the symposium is to highlight the challenges of dealing with rapid urbanisation in East Africa

The theme also takes cognizance of the fact that East Africa is now operating under a Common Market and that the opportunity is enhanced for Partner States to transform their institutions to deliver more relevant and sustainable solutions and to create platforms for sharing best practices. Consequently, there are emerging opportunities for all players in the construction industry.
